The Chicago Cubs on Friday signed versatile infielder Esteban German to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
German, 31, became a free agent on March 9, when he cleared waivers with the Kansas City Royals.
German is a career .277 hitter with seven homers and 102 RBI in 366 major league contests with Oakland (2002-2004), Texas (2005) and Kansas City (2006-2008). While primarily a second baseman, he has played six positions in his seven seasons.
