Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made the Cubs 3/1 favorites to win the 2009 National League Championship. Let’s take a closer look.

The Favorite: Chicago Cubs 3/1

The Cubs have one of the most balanced lineups in the National League, led by outfielder Alfonso Soriano, first baseman Derek Lee and NL Rookie of the Year, catcher Geovany Soto. Chicago’s starting pitching staff is outstanding as well, headlined by ace Carlos Zambrano and followed by Rich Harden, Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly. But the key for the Cubs isn’t making the playoffs because they should, but advancing to the World Series. Will the curse doom the Cubbies once again this year?

Next Best: New York Mets 7/2

After acquiring reliever J.J. Putz and top closer Francisco Rodriguez, the Mets shored up one of the weaknesses that kept them out of the postseason last year: their bullpen. Johan Santana is the ace of a solid rotation, but position players David Wright, Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado can’t under perform if the Mets are expected to make a deep run. New York also has to get past the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East, who are 6/1 long shots to win the National League Championship. The Long Shot Sleeper: San Francisco Giants 18/1

After adding Randy Johnson to a rotation that already featured NL Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum, young flamethrower Matt Cain and promising closer Brian Wilson, the Giants have one of the best pitching staffs in the NL. And as most pundits know, pitching wins championships, but the Giants need more offense if they’re going to win the National League Pennant. Their best hitter is catcher Bengie Molina, who is surrounded by solid role players like Randy Winn, Fred Lewis and Aaron Rowand. But San Fran needs youngsters Pablo Sandoval and Travis Ishikawa to provide some power to the lineup or else the G-Men will have to win every game 3-2. If San Fran adds Manny Ramirez, which could still happen, then they’ll be the instant favorites in the NL West and could push for a NL title.
